Sutton Colliery, Sutton in Ashfield

Sutton Colliery
Stanton Hill
England

Sutton colliery was situated in the village of Stanton hill about 2km north west of Sutton-in-Ashfield. Two small diameter shafts were originally sunk in1874 to a depth of 183 metres by the Stanton Iron and coal company. In the period 1896-1902 the shafts were widened to 4.27metres diameter and sunk to below the low main seam horizon at a depth of 425metres. The first coals were produced from the top hard and Dunsil seams which were worked until 1922 and 1916 respectively. The available resources of the deep hard and low main seams to the south west of the shafts were exhausted by 1943. A major reorganisation completed in august 1958,provided replacement of the pit top and bottom winding arrangements. The steam winders were replaced by an electric 1864kv winder at no2 downcast and a 261kv winder at no1 upcast. All coal winding was concentrated at no2 shaft in 3 tonne capacity mine cars, on double deck cages, also provided were a new ventilation fan, new coal prep plant and railway sidings.During the last year of production all coal produced from the piper and deep hard seams came from three longwall advancing faces using a double ended conveyor mounted trepanner(DECMT) operating in the piper seam and double ended ranging drum Shearers in the deep hard. The piper and deep hard seams becoming exhausted in 1989 when the colliery closed.
