Parliament Street
Sutton in Ashfield
England
Prior to the renaming of streets in Sutton in Ashfield in 1894 this was known as Wayster Lane and connected Victoria Street and Forest Street. The name 'Wayster' may well have been a corruption of the surname Walston, for Walston Place was a cul-de-sac off Parliament Street containing several early stone cottages with mullioned windows. In one of these doubtless lived John Walston who married Dorothy Tomson in 1593. The chapel had it's origins about 1811, previous to which services at Sutton were conducted by members of the early Baptist Church at Kirkby Woodhouse. Several early ministers were the Reverends Johnson, Baker and Twiggs. An interesting note of 1907 imparts the information that the Sunday School catered for no less than 350 children.
