The name Nibland, according to local legend, came from the term 'nibble and clink' from the noise that the flat-weave winding ropes made when going over the headstocks. A rhyme regarding pits in the locality goes; 'Butcherwood for idleness; Diminsdale for drink; Molynax for turning coal & damn old nibble & clink'.
