Railway station, Mansfield Woodhouse, c 1875

Debdale Lane
Mansfield Woodhouse
England

Looking north around the time the station opened (18 January 1875 to goods traffic and 1 June the same year for passengers) and showing (from left to right) the signal box, goods shed, station house and main station building on the Up (southbound) platform. As can be seen both the building and the platforms were constructed using timber (unlike all the other intermediate stations on the Midland Railway's extension from Mansfield to Worksop). This was because, although not particularly obvious here, this part of the station was built on an embankment which therefore dictated the provision of lightweight structures. The station was closed to passengers in 1964 and later demolished (apart from the goods shed) but was reopened in 1995 as part of the Robin Hood Line project linking Nottingham, Mansfield and Worksop. The new platforms, which included a bay for terminating trains, were built slightly to the north of the originals, closure of the goods yard (in 1967) releasing the necessary land for a more level site. The surviving goods shed was modified to provide a covered area spanning the bay platform.
