The stone stood in what was once part of the Royal Wood of Lyndhurst in part of the old Royal Forest of Sherwood. The Forest Stone was erected where the 'Moot' or 'Meet' was held by the Swains to settle their business or dues; followed afterwards by a meal of venison.
