Exchange Row
Mansfield
England

This passageway was part of Market House, built with, and as the rear of the Town Hall in 1836, and adjoining the prison. Entrance was by stone steps at each end and was originally called 'The Shambles', where butchers had their meat stalls. In 1891 the Free Public Library was moved from the Town Hall to rooms, not shown, on the left of the passage (as viewed), from where it moved to the Carnegie Free Library, Leeming Street, opened in May 1905. Alterations were made in 1921 to the area formerly occupied by the library for offices for the Medical Officer of Health and Sanitary Inspector, who stayed there until late 1939, the passageway still giving access at each end. The area shown, originally 'The Shambles', was converted to, and now is, the ladies' toilets, opened in 1959. The Exchange Row entrance, now closed, can still be seen, still with iron gates.
