G Goodhand was elected to the Town Council as a Labour East ward representative in 1945 and held his seat until the elections to the aldermanic bench in 1957. Ill health forced his retirement from the council in January 1966, but during his years of service he had the chairmanship of several committees and was Mayor during Coronation Year in 1953.
