More than a century ago, in 1855, William Baily, Samuel Hage and John Watson drew up a Deed of Partnership in which they promised to be 'true and just to each other.' With their signatures, Mansfield Brewery was born, and a few years later these original partners were joined by William Jackson Chadbum. It was a good time to start a Brewery. Four years earlier, in 1851, the Great Exhibition had provided a massive demonstration of Britain's new industrial power and prosperity. It was a prosperity built on coal and some of the most successful mines in the country were in Nottinghamshire. The thirst of the local miners provided a natural market for the excellent new Mansfield Brew; and as the demand for coal increased, so did the demand for Mansfield Beers. Under the leadership of W. J. Chadbum and S. C. Deakin, the Brewery continued to expand and prosper - but it is since the last war that Mansfield has really developed apace. The Brewery was re-organised and extended. Stainless steel replaced the old slate fermenting vessels. In 1975 'Marksman' lager was introduced, and a new computer controlled Brewhouse was commissioned in 1984.
