Inscription reading 'STANFORD THE MODERN BUTCHER' at the entrance to a shop on Westgate. Although tiled, the lettering was almost certainly applied using stencilling rather than being an integral part of the tiles themselves. The use of such tiles in butchers' shops was once commonplace - they were easy to clean down and created an impression with customers that the business was being conducted in a hygienic manner. Picture the Past website contributor Yvonne Holland comments: 'I remember this shop having sawdust on the floor late 1960s/early 1970s.'
