Pictured is Arthur Bentley, secretary, in the rain coat on the right hand side. Arnold shops always closed at lunchtime on Thursdays, as did lots of shops in the country. As a result, Nottinghamshire had a Thursday football league made up of shop workers. They played on the field on Church Lane, behind St. Mary's Church. In the early 1950s, as trade changed, this became Arnold St. Mary's Football Club, which played on the same field, but on a Saturday afternoon. At the same time through the 1950s, another football club called Arnold Rovers F.C. played on Saturday's on the small recreation ground between George Street and Arnold Park. As King George V Playing Fields came to be known, both football clubs were struggling and it was decided to merge the two teams into one to create the Arnold Town F.C.
