The inscription on the tombstones reads, ' In loving memory of (Gipsy) Chandros Charles Gray, who died March 14 1918, aged 66 years. Sadly missed, but never forgotten'. Note the two horseshoes. Picture the Past website contributor Dorothy Ritchie adds: 'The horseshoes are shown in the so called "unlucky" position, which I was always told meant that the luck runs out. if you ever put a horseshoe over a door on your house you should hang it the other way around - like a U-shape. It is a very unhappy story. Chandros Charles Gray was a horse dealer and hawker and his family were camped on land off Burton Road, Gedling. Trade was poor (presumably due to horses being requisitioned by the military for the War) and his wife said that he was concerned about this. Some clothes were found by the River Trent down the road at Stoke Bardolph, which his wife and son identified. On his death certificate it says that he died on 14 March, his body was found on 31 March in the River Trent at Fiskerton cum Morton. The inquest was held on 3 April 1918. The source of this information is the death certificate and a news report in the Newark newspaper.'
