Mr D Foster, signalman, is on the right, with a plate-layer. The Signal box is at the west end of Radcliffe Viaduct, on a 20ft embankment which suffered subsidence and required a buttress on the left of the steps. At the base of the signal box is what was originally an air-raid shelter for signalmen and shunters during the Second World War, here used as a store for lamp oil and plate-layers tools.
