During the First World war the South Notts. Hussars served as follows:- 1/1st (South Notts. Hussars), August 1914: in Nottingham. Part of the Notts & Derbys Mounted Brigade. August 1914: Brigade joined 1st Mounted Division. August 1914: moved with Brigade to 2nd Mounted Division, with which the regiment served on Gallipoli, before the Division was broken up in January 1916. Brigade redesignated 7th Mounted Brigade, moved to Salonika. June 1917: returned to Egypt. Brigade was attached to Desert Mounted Corps. April 1918: left the Brigade, dismounted and formed B Battalion, Machine Gun Corps with the Warwickshire Yeomanry. 26 May 1918: sailed from Egypt for France, but ship torpedoed and returned to Egypt. Eventually sailed again on 18 June 1918, arriving in France late June. 2/1st (South Notts. Hussars), Formed September 1914. In July 1916 converted into a cyclist unit. 3/1st (South Notts. Hussars), Formed in May 1915. Remained in United Kingdom until October 1916, when moved to Ireland. February 1917: absorbed in 2nd Reserve Cavalry Regiment. The South Notts. Hussars wear the distinctive Oak Leaf cap badge.
