Watnall
England
This view shows Watnall Tunnel, one of the remains of the former Great Northern Railway line from Nottingham to Pinxton and Derby. It passes through red sandstone and is 288 yards long. The facing and coping stones were cut from the sandstone excavated during the tunnels construction. Most of the coping stones have been dislodged since the line was closed. The 60 feet sandstone cutting continues from here to near Kimberley Station, three quarters of a mile away. Part of the cutting has collapsed as can be seen near the tunnel portal. The tunnel must have been filled in soon after this photo was taken. By 1975 this end had been completely obscured with infilling beginning to encroach westwards in the direction of the station. The other (east) end of the tunnel had also been dealt with similarly.
