The engine is an Ivatt Class 4MT, designed after WW2 by Mr Ivatt (4MT means the class was a moderately powerful 'mixed traffic' engine, 4 representing the power rating on a scale of 1 to 9). It was an LMS design. Located on the front of the engine, just below the chimney, the oil-lamp will have informed interested observersthat this was a stopping-passenger train. Passenger services ended on 4 April 1960.
