Known as 'Forty Bridges', the viaduct carried the Derby -Nottingham GNR line near Awsworth Main Street. The viaduct was 60 feet high and 1760 feet long. It took just under 12 months to construct and was completed in 1876. The final arch of the bridge was demolished in 1973 to make way for the Eastwood -Kimberley by-pass. One of the arches, bricked up but with windows, was used as living quarters by the workers during the building of the viaduct.
