The Sir Julien Cahn Homes of Rest had been opened in 1925 by the Duchess of Portland and the royal party are seen here having just entered via the main gateway on the corner of Park Drive and Byron Street. Sir Julien Cahn, 1st Baronet Cahn of Stanford on Soar (1882-1944) was a British businessman, philanthropist and cricket enthusiast who made his money from retailing, having over 300 stores across Britain by the time he retired in 1943. He was also responsible for 'rescuing' Newstead Abbey, onetime home of Lord Byron, by purchasing it and then donating it to Nottingham City Council. The Homes of Rest in Hucknall , a group of six almshouses built to a butterfly plan and designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield, were intended to house retired coal miners or other industrial workers. The figures here are (from L to R): Sir Reginald Blomfield, HRH The Duke of York, Sir Julien Cahn and (possibly) Phyllis, Lady Cahn. The Duke of York would later become King George VI following the abdication of his brother Edward VIII in 1936. ... not crowned until 1937, so still Duke of York!
