The pre-existing firms of Alex Knight (grocer) and Arthur Dickins (wine and spirit merchants) had traded opposite one another on Appletongate, before amalgamating in c. 1923 to become Knight Dickins & Co. Ltd., combining the trades of grocer and wine merchant. Their combined premises were as seen here on the west side of Appletongate (nos. 1-3). Dickins were bottlers of beer and stouts and agents for Newark's local breweries (James Hole & Co. Ltd and Warwick & Richardson Ltd.). They also bottled Bass, Worthingtons, Youngers, Whitbred and Jacobs larger, as well as manufacturing their own mineral waters and soda water in siphons. By the 1960's when this picture was taken they had 166 different lines of wines and spirits and 46 different beers and stouts. The business closed in October 1966 - just a year after this picture was taken. Also visible in the picture (left) is J Mills & Sons shoe shop.
