New Hucknall Colliery mined coal from 1878 until 1981 and prior to Nationalisation in 1947 was operated originally by the New Hucknall Colliery Company and latterly by New Hucknall & Blackwell Collieries Ltd. According to the Colliery Guardian's'Guide to the Coalfields 1971' in 1970 it was producing household and steam coal from the Piper seam and employed 530 men below ground and 140 on the surface. Closure, 11 years later, came about as a result of the exhaustion of workable reserves.
