England
A late 19th century view of The Square, Retford, showing the Town Hall, the Half Moon Inn to the left, and the (Leeds) Old Bank to the right, before it was rebuilt in 1888. The structure to the right in the image is a gas light described by A Jackson (1971) in 'A history of Retford' as andquot; An elegant doric cast-iron pillar and pedestal, 22 feet high, holding five gas lampsandquot;. This gas lamp was installed after 1831 and exploded in 1874. A replacement pillar lamp was erected in 1884. A possible date for the image is between 1868 (opening of the Town Hall) and 1874. Information kindly supplied by Megan Doole (Temporary Conservation Officer, Bassetlaw District Council).
