Samuel Eaton's Farmhouse, Stapleford

Nottingham Road - the Roach
Stapleford
Nottinghamshire
England

Looking at Samuel Eaton's old farmhouse and barns which once stood at the main crossroads in Stapleford at the junction of Nottingham Road, Derby Road, Toton Lane and Church Street at the location called The Roach. The name originated from the time when French prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars were set the task of hewing rock to create roads and this was referred to as the 'La Roche'. The large farmhouse is now the location of the police station. The signpost in the centre of the picture indicates that Trowell is 1 and a half miles to the left, Ilkeston is 3 and a half miles to the left, and Toton is 2 miles to the right. The photographer was possibly Fred or Thomas Cooper.
