Church Road - the Roach
Stapleford
Nottinghamshire
England
Looking at Balaclava Cottages which once stood at the main crossroads in Stapleford at the junction of Nottingham Road, Derby Road, Toton Lane and Church Street at the location called The Roach. (The name originated from the time when French prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars were set the task of hewing rock to create roads and this was referred to as the 'La Roche'.) The view is looking from Church Street, with Eaton's Road ( named after Eaton's Farm which once stood where the police station is today) to the left, and Derby Road to the right. Balaclava cottages is now the location of the HSBC (former Midland) Bank.
