Nottingham Road - The Roach, Stapleford

Nottingham Road - Toton Lane junction
Stapleford
Nottinghamshire
England

Looking at Nottingham Road from the junction with Toton Lane. Samuel Eaton's old farmhouse and barns once stood here at the main crossroads in Stapleford at the junction of Nottingham Road, Derby Road, Toton Lane and Church Street at the location called The Roach. The name originated from the time when French prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars were set the task of hewing rock to create roads and this was referred to as the 'La Roche'. The large farmhouse has just been demolished in this picture and the land is now the location of the police station which opened in 1909. The row of shops and Chequers Inn opposite, has barely changed today.
