Derby Road, Stapleford - detail of the Warren Arms

Derby Road
Stapleford
Nottinghamshire
England

Looking north east at the west side of Derby Road, looking towards the centre of Stapleford and showing the 'Warren Arms' pub. This was named after local hero Sir John Borlase Warren (1753-1822), who was the Lord of the Manor of Stapleford. Sir John commanded the Royal Navy during the War of American Independence and the Napoleonic Wars, in which he became a Rear Admiral. Amongst his many honours he was made Knight of the Bath and Knight of the Hanoverian Order Guelph. For several years he was a Member of Parliament for Nottingham. The postcard is titled 'Ye Olde Nottingham Road, Stapleford', as at the time the road would have been called that (it began at the Bramcote end of Stapleford and continued past the Roach down to the Erewash bridge).
