Christmas Party, King's Mill Hospital, Sutton-in-Ashfield, 1943

King's Mill Hospital
Sutton in Ashfield
Nottinghamshire
England

A group photo of participants in a war-time Christmas Party at what was then the 30th General Hospital of the University of California, but which later became King's Mill Hospital. The party was put on for Mansfield area children by American soldiers. The Mayor and Mayoress (presumably of Mansfield) are in the centre of the view. The Christmas decorations do not disguise the characteristic curved roof of a Nissen Hut. These 'temporary' buildings formed the basis of the original Hospital and took their name from the man responsible for their design, Major Peter Norman Nissen of the British Army.Picture the Past is grateful to website contributor Berisford Jones for some of the information above.
