Big' Ben Caunt was a bare knuckle fighter, born in a cottage near Newstead, and several times champion of England. He died in 1861 aged 47, and was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary Magdalene, his interment attracting a larger crowd than Lord Byron's funeral. It is widely believed that the hour bell at Westminster was named after Big Ben.
