Showing the gates to Papplewick Hall in the distance. Frederick Montagu built Papplewick Hall in 1787, and, lived there for some thirteen years. Mr. Montagu was a man of some consequence. He was appointed a Lord of the Treasury, in 1782, when Lord Rockingham was at the head of the Government, and again, in 1783, he held office under the Duke of Portland, though only for a short time. The Hall is set in a park with a woodland Garden laid out in the 18th century. It has fine contemporary decoration in the Adam style and an elegant staircase.
