Originally built as Newark's School of Science and Art, the building was erected as a memorial to Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. It was built entirely by public subscription and cost £3,154. The upper storey was devoted to Art teaching (where the large windows afforded excellent light), whilst science was confined to the ground floor. In 1910 the building became home to the new Newark High School (later the Lilley and Stone School). The notice at the entrance says 'Lilley and Stone Foundation. Newark High School for Girls'.
