Arthur Mee (1875-1943) was born on 21st July 1875, in Stapleford, near the church on the site which is now the church hall. He was educated in the village school and became a journalist in Nottingham at the age of 16. Five years later he went to London at the request of George Newnes. He is best remembered as the author of the King's England Series and the Children's Encyclopaedia. He also edited the Children's Newspaper. He always remembered his early school years at Church Street Boys' Schools which is now named The Arthur Mee Centre.
