Chapel Lane
Winthorpe
England
Formerly the old rectory. The house dates to the early 18th century, and despite bearing a stone proclaiming 'The Old Rectory' was never occupied by the Rector. The reason is explained in the 'Winthorpe Scrapbook' produced in 1971: at the time of the Enclosure of Winthorpe Village, lands were awarded to the Rector in lieu of nearly all the tithes. For these lands to have any value, he needed a farmhouse. So the Rector, in order to have an income, was obliged to rent out the Rectory and live elsewhere, hence the present designation of the house as Rectory Farm.
