Education at Magnus at this time was predominantly Classical, intending to prepare boys for Oxbridge. Day boys paid nothing for tuition in the three R's, but a fee was charged for extras such as Geography and History. The boy here is wearing his school uniform of smart broadcloth and mortar board that was introduced during the headship of Mr Plater, who was headmaster 1854-93. The old uniform was in rather scruffy corduroy. See 'Novarcensian' 124D
