Education at Magnus at this time was predominantly Classical, intending to prepare boys for Oxbridge. Day boys paid nothing for tuition in the three R's, but a fee was charged for extras such as Geography and History. The boy here is wearing his school uniform of a yet newer style, with Eton style collar, than the smart broadcloth and mortar board that was introduced during the headship of Mr Plater, (who was headmaster 1854-93) See NCCE000639. An even older uniform was in rather scruffy corduroy.
