The original Nether Lock was constructed in 1772. Before the section of the river between Nether Lock and Newark Basin was dredged, in the 1920s, goods for Newark and Nottingham were transhipped at Nether Lock. The lock was enlarged in 1926 by the Trent Navigation Company, Nottingham Corporation contributing
