In the ground of Olive House, No 16 Main Street. In the 19th century, Olive House (NCCE000743) was the home of the Herrod Family, willow growers. They mainly supplied willow fronds to Horace Mills' basket manufactory on Farndon Road in Newark, although with the small basket-making workshop seen here being located within the grounds of Olive House, it is not unreasonable to assume that Herrod willows were used here also. At the time this picture was taken in October 1979, basket making was no longer taking place in the building, and it was being used as a carpentry and joinery workshop. It was subsequently demolished and a small housing development built on the site. (Information kindly supplied by Farndon Local History Society)
