In St Mary's Churchyard, the replacement headstone lies over the original worn sandstone inscriptions. Described as Nottingham's first black entrepreneur, George Africanus was a slave freed by the Molyneux family who came to Nottinghamham to be a brass founder and property owner. His wife Ester ran a domestic servants register to help employment amongst freed slaves.
