This view shows the interior of Staythorpe Signal Box on the Midland Railway Line from Nottingham to Lincoln, specifically the instrument panel and diagram of the 'Block and track-circuited' signalling system. The two lines from left to right in the centre represent the main lines. The wide grey line running obliquely across them represents the road. The rectangular black mark to the right of the road is the signalbox. To the right of the box, above and below the main lines, are the power station sidings. Above are for empty wagons and below are for full ones (coal - slack). The power station is represented by the mark in the bottom right-hand corner of the diagram. To the left of the road (in the diagram) is the crossover line and sidings of the ash-disposal plant. The photograph was taken by kind permission of signalman P. Spratley. This signalbox opened in 1950 and signalled over the boundary between the former London Midland Region and the Eastern Region (note the different types of block instruments). The Sidings on the lower part of the diagram have now been removed, only the crossover and those at the top remain (but out of use). The block instruments are now all the same type. Information as of 2nd.June 2004. The signalbox is still open (12-2006).
