The earliest surviving parts of Newarks parish church of St.Mary date from the 14th century (c.1320), but even then it was the third church to be on the site the first dating from Saxon times. In 1310 there was an ambitious scheme to rebuild the church and the result is the church that can be seen today. The south aisle and the spire were complete before the Black Death (or plague year) of 1349 and are examples of Decorated Gothic. The rest of the church is in the Perpendicular style, being completed in the latter part of the 15th century. This picture was taken from the junction of Kirkgate with Middlegate. On the left of the picture can be seen W S Heading's wallpaper shop.
