In John Goodwin's book 'Memories of Norwell' the Bennetts' village shop is remembered thus: 'It was aptly named the general store because of it's range of wares. There was no electricity, but a handy oil lamp provided the light. The ceiling, besides holding the lamp, held kettles, milk cans, brushes, jugs and many other countless items. Glass jars on the counter held a variety of sweets. Drawers held shoe laces, stockings, socks, aprons, leather, cough and cold mixture. Soaps and powders, shoe polish, black lead for old iron kitchen ranges would fill one shelf. One counter had a bacon slicer and bread and cheese and flour were also displayed there..'
