Portland Street
Newark
Nottinghamshire
England
This picture was taken looking south along Portland Street close to it's junction with Lombard Street and London Road. The houses were soon to be demolished and a notice on them states that the site is for sale. The site has been redeveloped and is occupied by the flats of Portland Court. The date 1937 is significant as it marked the early stages of Newark's first wave of slum clearances. Their progress was interrupted by the second world war and resumed in earnest in the 1950's. On the left of the picture is the entrance to a narrow thoroughfare called Pepper Hill. Situated just opposite Hole's Castle Brewery, this small lane connected Portland Street with Albert Street. One former resident of Newark remembers how the houses here were entered through a front door and down two steps into the parlour. Today, the area between Pepper Hill and the junction of Portland Street and Albert Street has been laid out as a small garden.
