This market was originally held on Beastmarket Hill (opposite the Ossington Coffee Palace). It was removed to the Town Wharf in 1930 when the congestion it caused required its removal to the town wharf site seen here. It was originally a small-livestock market, selling rabbits, ducks and poultry, but by the time of this photograph, it sold mainly household, timber and garden goods. Richard Watkinson and partners, local auctioneers, handled sales on the site since 1988. Before that Mr Alfred Hopewell set up in business there in 1879, continuing in business there under the name of A Hopewell and Sons until 1969 when they amalgamated with Edward Bailey and Sons. These sold out to Prudential Property Services in 1987, who then soon sold it on to Richard Watkinson. In 2000 the Wednesday Auction Market moved from the Wharf onto the former Cattle Market on Tolney Lane, now part of the Riverside Park Development.
