Rolleston Station
Rolleston
England

On the Midland Line between Nottingham and Lincoln. The picture shows one of the disused platforms from the days when Rolleston Junction (as it was then known) was an interchange between the line from Nottingham to Lincoln (via Newark), and the branch to Southwell and Mansfield. The status of Rolleston Station was further enhanced by its proximity to Southwell racecourse: Race goers from Nottingham and the Midlands would travel by rail in their droves, whilst the racehorses themselves were also unloaded here. The former crossing keeper's house was built in 1846, but after the branch railway was scrapped in the 1960's as part of 'Beeching's cuts', the house was converted to use as a private dwelling.
