In around 1911, under the Headship of Henry Gorse, the Magnus Grammar School ceased playing football altogether. Thereafter, only rugby was played. As early as 1913 the school magazine 'The Novarcensian' reported that 'rugger has been voted an unqualified success by the whole school'
