Education at Magnus at this time was predominantly Classical, intending to prepare boys for Oxbridge. Day boys paid nothing for tuition in the three R's, but a fee was charged for extras such as Geography and History. Magnus Grammar School started life in 1532 in the Tudor Hall on Appletongate, then moved to its present buildings on Earp Avenue on the site acquired by Thomas Earp in 1908. Thomas Magnus, Chaplain to King Henry VIII, gave money to start a Grammar School and a Song School. In 1912 the school prospectus listed 120 day boys and 20 Boarders.
