One of the signatures is Hercules Clay. He was a Newark business man at the time of the English Civil War. Dreamed his house would be destroyed and moved his family out. Shortly afterwards it was hit by a grenado ( exploding cannonball). Hercules then gave thanks to god, set up a trust fund and decreed on that day there should be a special church service and alms given to the needy in his name. This service still takes place each year in Newark Church.
