Swann's taxi business was started by Francis Swann's father at 14 Baldertongate, Newark. Originally it dealt with hiring out carriages and horses and operating horse taxis around the town (one of Swann's horse carriages can just be seen in the background, left). By c 1910 the business had developed to include motor taxis as seen here. Mr Francis Swann (1183-1943) is seen here sitting at the wheel of a French made Darracq 'light car', specifically developed for taxi work. Swann's business ceased c 1925, the premises at 14 Baldertongate passing to Pratt & Gelsthorpe motor engineers. Pratt & Gelsthorpe still have their car showroom on Baldertongate to this day.
