Kirkgate
Newark on Trent
England
This is the street called Kirkgate photographed in 1963. Newark has a number of Medieval half-timbered (black-and-white) buildings surviving around the town. Some are now pubs, others, like the one on the right here, are shops. Back at the time of the English Civil War, however, it was a rather opulent house, and is noted for the fact that Queen Henrietta Maria (wife of King Charles I) stayed here.
