Main Street, Epperstone Village, early 20th century

Main Street
Epperstone
England

This early post card image shows what was then the Epperstone Post Office (now gone) on the left. Note the wooden trunking leading wires down the telegraph pole and into the Post Office. Epperstone at that period (before the bypass was built) was on the trunk road route from Leicester to Doncaster. The telegraph appears to have followed the same route and, as seen in the picture, the poles were substantial. Remains of some of them can still (2010) be seen in the village. Opposite the Post Office stands Epperstone's celebrated Dovecote which is recorded elsewhere in this picture collection. The house to the right was later the home of the Clark family who in the 1940s and 50s operated Clark's Coaches from large wooden garages and a yard next down the street from their house. They were used by the village school for occasional excursions to swimming (Calverton Lido), Wollaton Hall and once in the 1950s to see the Duke of Edinburgh pass by car through Lowdham.
