Great North Road
Newark on Trent
Nottinghamshire
England
As well as showing a fine perspective of Newark Castle, this picture is also noteworthy for its inclusion of a view of one of Newark's turnpiked roads. This view is taken from the turnpiked Great North Road looking westwards over Newark's Trent Bridge into the town. The Grantham to Newark section of the Great North Road was turnpiked under an act of 1725 and a toll house was erected at Newark on the town side of the bridge. It is clearly visible on this picture just to the left of the castle. The building, much extended, which still survives today is the headquarters of the Nottinghamshire Women's Institute. Instead of a gate, this toll house had a heavy chain suspended across the road and attached to posts at either side. Upon payment of the toll the gatekeeper would unlock one side of the chain and allow the traveller to pass through. Unaccountably this chain, or any other means of controlling access to the turnpike, are not shown in this picture.
