Prominant in the picture is Castle Motors Garage who moved into their premises in the mid-1920s and remained there until 1972, when Holden's furniture shop moved in. The house had formerly been a grand town house built around 1730. As yet the 1st owner is unknown, but 40 years later it was the home of Samuel Sketchley. (see NCCE001340 for further info on Samuel Sketchley and the history of the building) On the right of Castle Motor's is the Castle Cafe, whilst behind the bus, at number 5 Castle Gate is the shop of George Lineker, watchmaker, who retained the honour of winding the clock in the parish church. To the right of Lineker's shop is the George and Dragon Public House (Warwick's Ales), whilst at the entrance to Kirkgate is the shop of Charles Leachman, Gentleman's Outfitters.Note the street lighting suspended on wires down the middle of the road.
