55 (now 61) Appleton Gate
Newark on Trent
England
This photo from c.1882 shows Robert Wilkinsons brush shop on the street called Appletongate a little way from the town centre. The building still stands today, and once marked the entrance to a large development of 19th century back-to-back houses known collectively as Tenter Buildings. By the 1930s back-to back housing for workers in Britain came to be seen as insanitary and overcrowded and wholesale programmes of demolition were begun. Today only the building seen here remains to mark the location of Tenter Buildings. You may be aware of the condition of being on tenterhooks. Try Googling this to find the presumed use of this area of Newark before the houses were built.
